KES Volunteer Registration Information
Thank you so much for showing an interest in volunteering with Ketterinus Elementary School. While there is no obligation, we certainly hope you will choose to make yourself available to the school in some capacity. Every hour counts!
The PTO and teachers will be organizing many fun activities this school year and would love to have all KES families join in! The more hands-on-deck, the stronger our parental voices and the more time our fine teachers have to spend with our precious children. Donations of money and supplies are wonderful – but so is your time and talent.
The following information has been compiled with you, our community, in mind. We hope this explains how you can prepare yourself to participate in any before, after and during school day activities you wish.

WHY DO I NEED TO SUBMIT TO THIS PROCESS?
In order to participate within the school the county requires that you submit your name for an official background check conducted by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office and the National Sexual Offenders Database.
WHO SHOULD SUBMIT TO A BACKGROUND CHECK?
Anyone wishing to participate on school property or for school functions during the 2012-2013 school year. This includes not only parents, but grandparents, caregivers and
community members who have talents to share.
Examples of functions you must be approved for in order to participate:
- Lunch with your child
- Walking your child to class
- Field Trips
- Helping teachers with a class celebration
- Volunteering in the library/classroom
WHAT IF SOMEONE COMES FROM OUT OF TOWN or I HAVE A NEW BABYSITTER or I FORGOT TO SUBMIT MY NAME – WILL THEY BE TURNED AWAY?
No. Everyone walking into the school must show a picture ID and log into the computer located in the front office. If you have not previously had a background check, as would be the case for a brand new babysitter or an out-of-town relative, the front office has the ability and the authority to conduct a background check right there. It is not mandatory for you to have a background check before you pass through the school doors, but no one gets past the desk without having been cleared through the system St. Johns County has in place. Doing it today ensures there will be no delay when you want to participate.
WHAT ABOUT MY PRIVACY/WHO WILL BE SEEING THIS?
No one within Ketterlinus Elementary School will handle your paperwork directly – this is a county law strictly enforced and managed by St. Johns County. It is for the safety of all our children.
The KES PTO Volunteer Coordinator will only get a YES/NO response from the county and no additional information pertaining to why your application was rejected – your personal situation remains private.
DID I ALREADY DO THIS?
Your background check is good for 3 years. If you have done this for another St. Johns County school within the last 3 years, you do NOT need to resubmit.
If you are unsure - we ask that you please submit your name again. There is no fee and no penalty.
WHEN WILL I KNOW IF I WAS APPROVED?
No news is good news. The check should occur within two weeks (give or take). You will only be contacted if there was a rejection of your background check.
SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
As the school year approaches and the calendar is updated, the PTO will be sending out information about the specific needs and opportunities for helping at Ketterlinus Elementary. Check the KES-PTO website frequently as this will be the most up-to-date information.
